On Friday, December 11, 2009, the Mt. Washington Auto Road will open for the season with winter tours aboard the SnowCoach.

On Monday, October 19, 2009, the Mt. Washington Auto Road ended its 148th season of summer operation. The Mt. Washington Auto Road is now closed for the summer season, but it will reopen in December for tours aboard the one-of-a-kind SnowCoach.

On Sunday, August 30, the Mt. Washington Auto Road will offer the third and final Sunrise Drive of the 2009 season. The Mt. Washington Auto Road will open at 4:30am for guests to drive themselves to the summit.

On Saturday, August 8, 2009, the Mt. Washington Auto Road, America’s Oldest Manmade Tourist Attraction, will celebrate its 148th birthday. Any vehicle that arrives with the famous “This Car Climbed Mt. Washington” Bumper Sticker already affixed to it will receive free passage up the Auto Road.

Repeating the top of the leader sheet from the previous year, 30-year-old Anthony Colby and 46-year-old Marti Shea won Newton’s Revenge, a 7.6-mile bike race to the summit of Mt. Washington, the highest mountain in the northeastern United States.

The Mt. Washington Auto Road announces plans to construct the Glen House hotel at the base of Mt. Washington. Continuing the historic tradition of hospitality and recreation in Pinkham Notch, the hotel is the fifth rendition of the Glen House, the first being completed in 1852. The company, family owned since 1901, plans to open the Glen House in June of 2011 to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the Mt. Washington Auto Road.

Rickey Gates, of Boulder, Colorado, ran away from a field of anxious challengers to win the 49th Annual Mt. Washington Road Race for the first time, in 59 minutes 58 seconds, becoming only the second American runner to break one hour (fellow Coloradan Matt Carpenter ran 59:49 in 1993 and 59:16 in 1999) and became the owner of the 8th fastest time run in this storied race. Meanwhile Brandy Erholtz, of Bailey, Colorado, handily won the women's half of the race in a time of 1:10:53. Her time was the 4th fastest women's time ever on this course, 15 seconds faster than her debut in this all-uphill race in 2008.

Beginning next year with the 50th running of the Mount Washington Road Race, the newly formed Mt. Washington Road Race Hall of Fame will recognize outstanding runners who have competed in this storied all-uphill “Run to the Clouds” over the decades. Formed by the race organizers and by three-time winner and race historian Dave Dunham, the Hall of Fame will serve to highlight extraordinary feats of uphill running and exceptional runners who have left an enduring mark on the 7.6-mile Mt. Washington Auto Road.

On Sunday, June 21, the Mt. Washington Auto Road hosts Mt. Washington Alternative Energy Day. All hybrid or alternatively-powered vehicles can drive to the summit for $20 per carload.
