See what fun we had on the mountain on April 23, 2011! – Check out our blog: 150th Spring or should I say Winter, Clearing of the Auto Road
Each spring crews work diligently to clear ice and snow from the Mt. Washington Auto Road. Guests got a rare look at this process and helped recreate clearing the snow the old fashioned way—by shovel!
Snow at the famous Cragway Drift can be piled 25 to 30 feet deep, and before heavy machinery, the entire roadway was cleared by shovel. We recreated this process for one day in 2011, when guests helped clear the Mt. Washington Auto Road. Each participant received lunch, a commemorative shovel and a dual image framed photo of their part in the reenactment along with that special trip up Mt. Washington.
Special thanks to our friends at Ames True Temper for providing us with their first rate shovels. Ames is the oldest shovel manufacturer in America. They’re even older than us having produced America’s first metal shovel in 1774! ![]()
