Green’s Grant, NH – The owners of the Mt. Washington Auto Road, known as the oldest man-made tourist attraction in North America, on Saturday formalized the recommendation of management to promote Tobey Reichert to the position of Assistant General Manager. Reichert was initially hired in 2016 with the aim of his someday taking the reins of the family company. Long-time General Manager, Howie Wemyss will work with Reichert to insure a smooth transition when the time comes for Wemyss’ retirement.
When Reichert becomes the General Manager, he will be the sixth generation of the family to run the companies. Elihu Libby purchased the Mount Washington Carriage Road in 1906, no doubt realizing that the automobile was here to stay and the Carriage Road would benefit from that. Now, 113 years later, the family has not only retained that ownership, but expanded greatly to take advantage of the natural surroundings of “The Glen,” the historic name given to the picturesque valley at the base of the Road. In 1994, Great Glen Trails opened to better utilize the valley property on a year-round basis. In 2018, the Glen House Hotel made a triumphant reappearance to return the company to its roots in hospitality which began in 1852.
Tobey Reichert is a Gorham High School graduate who went on to Southern Maine Technical College in automotive management, then attended what is now White Mountains Community College where he received an associate degree in business management. Following formal education, Reichert launched a career in law enforcement starting with the Berlin Police Department in 2000 before moving to the Coos County Sheriff’s Department. Tobey and his wife Dannielle and son Camden make their home in Gorham.
